A Finish, and a Giveaway!
The lovely Tara gifted me with a string quilt kit a while back – I used her strips, plus some of my own, and made this! We both used the now-famous filminthefridge tutorial . I used 5-inch squares for mine, for a final size of about 52 x 65. Wow, what fun it was to sew right over the paper! I found a mess of pre-cut squares from some former craft project so I used those; I'd probably go a little larger next time, LOL! I offset the white by one rather than using it as a center strip and I do like the effect. I must say, I’m not generally a “sweet” kinda gal, but this piece really grew on me and by the end I loved it. I sent it to a friend who lives in a farmhouse even older (and possibly even more crumbly) than mine; it felt like it wanted to live with her. The USPS says it has arrived so I can share it with you now!
And since I had so much fun with it, I thought I’d start a little “String It Forward!” Leave me a comment telling me whether you’re a Sweetie Pie (think spring brights and pastels) or a BrazenBi*ch Beauty (saturated colors, batiks, etc.), and I will make you up a strip set based on your choice so you can make your own top. Hopefully the winner will have as much fun as Tara and I did and will keep it moving forward so someone else can make one of these fun quilts. I’ll draw a name on the 28th!

Wow, who knew that offsetting the white would give you THAT!!!! I love that, sign me up as a Brazen B!tc....Beauty, please, Grendelskin! And thank you for the chance to win, you are very generous and your friend will treasure that quilt forever, I'm sure.
ReplyDeletePS- what is that a photo of in your header photograph?
What a gorgeous quilt! I love the offset white strips - I think it really adds interest and gives it a unique charm. While I have my moments of bi*chiness in real life, I have to say that in quilting I'm more of a Sweetie Pie, or maybe somewhere in between. I like saturated colors and spring brights, but not pastels or batiks so much (although I've used both). A Bi*chy Pie, maybe?
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt...love the large diamond effect! I would have to say I am a Brazen B eauty!!! Love batiks especially. Great idea for a giveaway. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is stunning.
ReplyDeleteSomeone elses scraps are always so much more fun than the scraps you have been staring at too long.
What a lucky recipient.
Oh Sally it's GORGEOUS!! I can't stop looking at it, I love it!! You need to make one for your crumbly house too. ;-) I really like the top and bottom border too, and that you didn't do it on the sides...adds more interest.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue what I am. Most of my quilts are bolder, so I guess I aspire to be brazen? But I love the softness of this quilt too. If I win, surprise me? ;-) What a great idea, to pass it along. If I win, I'll do the same.
I LOVE your quilt! Gorgeous!! And the layout is sot striking. I am more of a sweetie pie I think! Thank you for a chance to win! I love the string quilts....I definitely want to make more.
ReplyDeleteSince you're asking for color choices and not for personality, I'd say that I'm more of a sweetie pie :0
ReplyDeleteI think off-setting the white was a very smart design choice. It gives your quilt so much texture! And those borders!! I may steal that idea one day ...
Oooooh! I love, love, love it! I believe that I am a Sweatie B*tch. Can that be? I love the springy jelly beany colors, but I love the saturated in your face colors, too. Actually, I have never met a color I didn't like, and to quilt with it - YUM!!
ReplyDeletegorgeous quilt!! the borders add just the right touch to all the fantastic piecing you did.
ReplyDeleteguess i'm a brazen beauty. i love bold. my boss says i'm just like my coffee: blonde and bitter (although i haven't been blonde since my youth).
Great giveaway! Love batiks! Please count me in!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt and wouldn't it be fun to have one of my own! I would have to go for the brazen beauty colorway! It would be nice to brighten up this cold dark winter!
ReplyDeleteUhh how beautiful a quilt you made there.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win some Sweetie Pie fabric. I'm already imagining the finished quilt...
That quilt is absolutely lovely! Seeing that makes me want to make one of my own!
ReplyDeletePlease sign me up for a sweetie pie. I like both but seem to be in a more pastel mood lately.
Thanks for this generous giveaway!
The quilt is gorgeous and I didn't want to leave for work today, just wanted to stay wrapped up in it! The photos don't do it justice - the colors are beautiful! (And I was so surprised when my husband said I had a package!!) I would say I'm more the brazen type on colors, but these go together so beautifully, I love them. (Don't include me in the giveaway, I can barely keep up with my clothes-sewing plans and do not need to take up quilting!) XXOO
ReplyDeleteI swing both ways - colour wise I mean - brights or pastel I love both. Love your sting quilt too - its a beauty.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous quilt, anyone would be lucky to have that in their home! I think I'm more of a bright colors kind of person, so I guess a sweetie pie.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful work of art. Your friend is a lucky girl to find this in her mailbox.
ReplyDeleteThank you for a chance to win some gorgeous fabrics! I would go with the Brazen Beauty set! Oh I hope I'm lucky! :)
Stunning quilt! Your friend is very lucky to be able to snuggle up in that wonderful quilt.
ReplyDeleteIf I were lucky enough to win I would go with the Spring Sweetie Pie :)
This is amazing! I would love to have a reason to start on of these by receiving a lovely starter package in the mail. I am definitely of the Brazen variety. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt and what a fun giveaway! I am a sweetie pie:)
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! I am definitely a Sweetie. I love the bright spring colors that are popping up everywhere!

ReplyDeletewow what a lovely string quilt. I have one that needs to be quilted together, it's on my to do list......gosh that list is getting long. Its a neat process making a string quilt, actually it's idiot proof, guess that's why I like it so much!!
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Gill in Canada
Great quilt you made I love it. I would be the brazen beauty if I win Thank you so much for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! I love how you offset the white as well. Thanks for the chance to win, I'd say I'm a Sweetie Pie too :)
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is beautiful and you have a very lucky friend! Love the white non-centered strings and the way the blocks are positioned - like square ripples. The "String It Forward" idea is grand. I'm probably more of a Brazen Beauty kind of gal. Thanks for hosting a sweet giveaway!

Tricia at Just keep Swimming tipped me off about your give away and being a Brazen Beauty I'd love to win fabrics for a quilt! I hope this give away is open internationally as I'm in Sweden! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks or a generous give away!
Wow this turned out GORGEOUS!!! I just recently did my first string quilt - and it is BABY SIZE! LOL! But the obsession has started - I just loved the process! Major kudos to you for making such a large one, and sooooo yummy!! What a great idea to string it forward :) You can count me as a sweety pie in color choices and that's about it! LOL
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful! I love the diamond layout. Also the pay it forward event is very sweet of you. I'd prefer the bright colour choices (mine would probably be a baby quilt, and I like to make those bright!)
ReplyDeleteSarah
The quilt is beautiful. I would have to say I am a sweetie pie.
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt!!!!! It could come live with me anytime!
ReplyDeleteYou had a question about my hexagon stars ... the silly paper that I used ... they are from a 2009 365 day calendar on a pad that you peeled off each day. I saved them and used them for my stars. So, now you know! :o) I never even thought about them and funny that you noticed.
